Voll Lateral Ledger
How this is put together.
Where the numbers come from
Two sources, and nothing else. Salary ranges come from what firms disclosed in their own published job postings. Attorney counts come from a licensed legal-industry database of law firms and the lawyers working at them.
Nothing here is modelled, estimated, or inferred from a survey. If a figure is on your report, there is a row behind it that somebody published.
What a posted salary is
It is a floor. Firms publish the bottom of what they will pay and negotiate upward, and a great many firms publish nothing at all. A range on your report is what was disclosed by the firms that disclosed something, which is not the same as what the market pays.
It is also always a range with its denominator attached. A single number invites you to treat it as your number, and it is not: it is the shape of a market you are one participant in.
Why we never blend two salary tracks
National-scale firms and regional firms are two different markets that happen to share job titles. Averaging them produces a number that describes nobody, and it is the single most common way market salary data gets quietly ruined.
We keep them in separate cells, so blending is not something we decline to do, it is something the data cannot express. If your report shows both, it is because we could not tell which one you are on, and it says so.
Why two counts of openings can disagree
Demand counts postings in your market, at your seniority band, in the last ninety days. Open roles counts postings across every market you can work in, tested against your actual years rather than your band, reaching back six months.
They answer different questions and they will rarely match. Neither is the corrected version of the other, and your report says which is which wherever both appear.
What we do not cover
We currently measure 51 markets. Everywhere else is not tracked, which is not the same as quiet. A practice or a city missing from your report is a gap in our coverage, and we would rather tell you that than fill it in.
We also do not measure in-house hiring, government roles, or anything that is not a law firm posting. Where a report mentions those, it is marked as directional.
What we will not do
We do not score you out of a hundred against a job. A percentage match invites an argument about the decimal instead of the reasoning, and implies a precision that job postings and headcounts cannot support. Firms are named in tiers, with the reason attached, so that when we are wrong you can see why.
We do not tell you to move. If the honest read is that you are already at the top of your market, the report says that, and it says it first.
