The California lateral market, in the numbers firms publish.

We track every opening California law firms post publicly, and the salary ranges they publish with them. Here is what the market looks like right now, and what it means if you are weighing a move.

What California firms are hiring for today

Openings posted publicly by law firms with California offices (July 2026). Postings only show you the visible market; many searches, especially at partner level, never get posted at all.

Litigation openings

The largest posted-job market in American law. California posts more law-firm openings than any other state, and the demand is broad: litigation leads, but corporate and intellectual property each run deeper than most states' entire markets. The Bay Area and Los Angeles set the pay ceiling, and pay-transparency law means nearly every posting shows its range.

What California postings are offering

Salary ranges taken directly from current public postings. Ranges like these are the floor of a negotiation, not the ceiling; knowing where a specific firm actually lands is the part we do for a living.

The part postings can't show you

The best California moves are rarely the posted ones.

A posting tells you a seat exists. It does not tell you which groups are quietly building, which firms flex on class year, or where your book and background put you at the front of the line. That is the read we give every California attorney we work with, confidentially, before anything is sent anywhere.

For employers

Hiring in California? Attorney search and legal staffing, on your terms.

Firms find us under a lot of names: legal recruiter, legal search firm, attorney headhunter, legal staffing agency. What we do in California is the same under any of them. We map who is movable in your practice area, approach them confidentially, and bring you vetted attorneys who have already said yes to a conversation about your firm.

Contingency or retained

Contingency or retained, your choice. Retained searches are exclusive; contingency searches are not.

First candidates within a week

First vetted candidates within a week of the brief.

Every placement guaranteed

Every placement carries a guarantee. The specifics are set in the fee agreement and differ between the legal and healthcare desks.

Questions law firms ask us

How does an attorney search with Voll work in California?+

It starts with a 15-minute call to take the brief: the seat, the practice, the class years or book you need, and what has not worked so far. We then run a research pass over the California market, which we track firm by firm, and you see the first vetted, genuinely interested candidates within a week. From there we handle scheduling, feedback and the offer negotiation so nothing awkward lands between you and your future hire.

Do you work on contingency or retained?+

Both, and you choose. Most associate and counsel searches run on contingency: you pay nothing unless you hire our candidate. Partner, group and confidential searches are often retained. A retained search is exclusive to us; a contingency search is not, so you can run other recruiters alongside us.

What does it cost to use a legal recruiter?+

On contingency, nothing until you hire our candidate. We work on standard contingency terms, agreed in writing before you see anyone's identifying details. Many firms have their own fee agreement, and we sign yours rather than asking you to sign ours.

Is there a guarantee if the hire does not work out?+

Yes. Every placement carries a guarantee. The specifics are set in the fee agreement, and if your firm has its own agreement the guarantee follows its terms.

What do you need from us to start?+

A 15-minute call. A job description helps but is optional; we take the brief verbally, confirm it back to you in writing, and start the research pass the same day.
